"Sunken Champagne Fetches Record Price at Christie’s London Sale

Christie’s sold over $300,000 worth of fine and rare Champagne at its Oct. 22 auction in London, breaking two world records in the process. The day’s showstopper was a bottle of Heidsieck Monopole Gout American 1907, also taken by a European buyer, which sold for $4,068 – the highest price ever paid for a single bottle of Champagne.

The Heidsieck 1907 was part of a consignment of 24 bottles that were salvaged from the wreck of a Swedish schooner that sank in the Baltic Sea in 1916 (Upfront, Sept. 15). The Champagne has been submerged in 200 feet of water at a constant temperature of about 40ºF for 81 years, and represented a unique chance to buy wine that had been stored virtually in suspended animation. ‘I was lucky to taste it twice, and it was spectacular,’ said David Elswood, head of Christie’s European sales."
